What Is Cuffing Season?
Cuffing season, depending on who you talk to, is a period that begins in October when the leaves begin to fall and our thoughts turn to Pumpkin Spice Lattes, trips to the orchard, Halloween and the Fall candles hit the stores. It’s the time of the year when the first winds of fall begin to blow letting us know winter isn’t far behind. These, in my opinion, are the triggers that start the selection process.
As the nights get longer, you may notice you’re getting probed or what I call rotation calls/texts. Texts that start off with something lame like “I was just thinking about you” or I wondered how you were doing, I haven’t talked to you in forever.” Calls of this nature are to see if you’re available if not, they move on to the next person in the rotation.
The thing is, many of us, simply put do not want to be alone during the long cold, and dark winter. We look for temporary mates to help make the nights a bit more agreeable. We’re looking for someone who likes to stay in and bundle up. We’re also looking for “a plus one” person to take to the family and office Christmas parties that seem to be full of coupled-up people. During this time, we’re more likely to answer banal texts than any other time we would blow off.
Successful Cuffing Season Rules:
1-Cuffing season liaisons aren’t meant to be permanent and usually end around Valentine’s Day. In some cases, these winter relationships may make it to early spring when like our winter clothes, they’re packed up until next Cuffing Season.
2-Try not to bring your feelings to this, leave them at home. This is a situation that probably won’t last beyond the first robin’s chirp in spring. Many cuffs are broken shortly after Valentine’s Day.
3-Try not cuff with someone who isn’t a homebody, someone who just has to be out every weekend regardless of the weather. This is a homebody thing. Think things like catching up on your favorite series, and staying home while eating good heavy stuff like beef stew, chicken and dumplings, etc.
How to Attract a Cuffing Partner
In order to have a successful cuddle season, you have to attract the perfect (or as close to perfect as possible) female of the species. In order to do that we need to make sure our presentation is top shelf. As this blog is about fragrance, we’ll concentrate on that.
The Attraction Scent
The sense of scent is something animals use to determine if someone is mate potential. Let’s face it, we are animals complete with the gift of choice and a thought process. Keep in mind, you’re competing with other males for a hibernation mate, you’ll have to stand above and beyond them in the scent arena. Much of your competition is going to be out there wearing the same old top X colognes that everyone is wearing such as Aqua di Gio, anything Hugo or anything Nautica. Leave those scents at home and try these instead.
Versace Eros
Eros, named after the Greek god of love who it is said was so good at matchmaking, he could shoot his arrow, blindfolded and cause his target to fall in love with the first person they saw. Is this cologne the magic arrow, perhaps but it’s a great attraction fragrance perfectly suited for a night in a bar or club, thanks to its strong presence.
This is achieved some powerhouse notes that include:
- Top Notes-Green Apple, Lemon, Mint
- Middle Notes- Ambroxan, Geranium, Leather
- Base Notes-Atlas Cedar, Virginia Cedar, Oakmoss, Vanilla, Vetiver
Thanks to the strong, long-lasting notes, this cologne is perfect for a night out on the town. Eros is strong enough to attract the opposite sex by helping you stand out in the crowd. It will also compete with the smells you find while out such as cigarette and cooking odors. This creation can also double as a date night scent. It’s a tad strong for everyday, work, or school use but may work with a single spray.
The First/Second Date Scent
Welcome to the first date. Your pickup, stalking or swiping skills were good enough to get you a date. The first step is getting a cuffing partner. Now is the time to close the deal.
You’ve brushed your teeth, taken a shower, and rehearsed your spiel. One thing is missing, a great first or second date scent. A nice first date is one that has to project manliness without coming off like a wild man. It must give the impression of class with a hint of mystery.
Released in 2011, Dior Homme is your go-to, first-date scent. This cologne projects everything mentioned above and more thanks to notes such as:
- Top Notes: Bergamot, Sage Lavender
- Middle Notes: Amber, Cacao, Iris
- Base Notes: Leather, Patchouli, Vetiver
For lack of a better description, I look at this cologne as warm. By warm, I mean the initial notes of these fragrances are calming and inviting thanks to the bergamot notes which are known to relieve tension and stress while easing the fear. Getting her past those first-date jitters is essential if you want to be able to really talk and get to know each other.
If things progress from here(things tend to move fast with regards to cuffing season)you’ll find yourself with a winter snuggle buddy in no time.

The Great Holiday Party Scent
I know, we’re getting ahead of ourselves but I would be remiss if I didn’t make on more fragrance suggestions. A nice holiday party scent.
One of the joys of being cuffed with someone is you don’t have to worry about a date to your aunt’s for Thanksgiving or the office Christmas party. As you’ve already closed the deal and have your winter queen, there’s no need to use heavy attraction style scents. That’s not to say you should let yourself go.
A scent in this category is something that won’t overshadow your date but will play into your hidden agenda, possibly attracting someone as a spring fling. Sure that sounds douchey but hey, we already know this is fun, the nice thing isn’t going to go too far into the new year.
When it comes to winter, Blue De Chanel(EDT Version) released in 2010 is one of my favorite scents. It’s a heavier smell I tend to avoid during the warmer months but love when it’s cool. This frag reminds me of Christmas and the holidays.
It took me half a second to understand why this is. Two of the warm top notes Ginger and Nutmeg are “cookie spices.” Smells like this not only help to relax your date, they take me back to a day of cookies and Santa Clause, a little happy space that will help me get through someone else’s family dinner.
The other note will not take a back seat to our “cookies” notes. The sandalwood top note is one that possesses harmonizing calming properties. Something you’ll need when you move on your cuddle buddy’s cousin or co-worker.
Our middle citrus notes combined with manly vetiver will get you noticed from across the room.
Other notes in the cologne are:
- Top Notes: Ginger, Labdanum, Nutmeg, Sandalwood, Patchouli
- Middle Notes: Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lemon, Mint, Vetiver
- Base Notes: Cedar, Incense, Pink Pepper,
Cuffing season can be one of the most rewarding but short-term experiences you’ll ever have if you remember these things are short-term and usually don’t last beyond the spring.
On the other hand, every situation is different. It once took 3 years for a cuff and me to decide we really weren’t made for each other.
