The Classic Polo Cologne for Men by Ralph Lauren In The Green Bottle
“If you want to have intercourse with that girl, find out what kind of cologne her father wore.”
~Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, Ph.D., M.D
The Big Bang Theory
Polo by Ralph Lauren(the original green bottle is one of the best vintage cologne and arguably the best Polo cologne to date. This fragrance is nostalgia in a bottle to me. But can a classy well crafted old school men’s fragrance compete with the swagger some of the new colognes hitting the market today?
I first experienced Green in a most painful way. While at a house party back in the day, I found a bottle sitting on a counter in a bathroom, I took one sniff and decided this was the cologne for me.
Rather than buy my own bottle, I stuffed this little treasure down my pants. Bad move, the bottle opened pouring cologne on my private parts. In case you didn’t know, this must be what hell feels like. The burning seemed to last for an eternity!
“Green” released in 1978 was one of the first two colognes released by Ralph Lauren. The rest is as they say history. The original Polo was followed by a series and flankers that include Polo(s) Sport (released in 1994), Blue (released in 2003), Black (Released in 2005), Red White & Blue (released in 2009) and the popular Big Pony series marketed toward the young crowd released in 2010.
Polo Green is a well crafted, well thought out cologne that features notes such as:
- Top Notes: Artemisia, Bergamot, Cumin, Basil, Green Notes, Juniper, Lavender, Pine
- Middle Notes: Carnation, Coriander, Jasmine, Geranium, Marjoram, Rose, Thyme
- Base Notes: Amber, Cedar, Frankincense, Leather, Musk, Oak Moss, Patchouli
Who Should Wear Polo Ralph Lauren for Men
While thought of as an old man’s or as I prefer, mature cologne, Polo by Ralph Lauren is a cologne for anyone who possesses class, maturity (mature does not mean old guys) and of course a bit of swagger to complete the final product.
This is a scent for you IF, you’re a person who doesn’t mind stepping out of the box and shelving the everyday “safe” colognes in your collection and trying something new.
The man who wears this cologne shows up to the party as if he were a suave Sean Connery 007 type guy, not some blinged out rapper or douche bag who thinks wearing his hat on backward or pants down to his ankle makes him cool.
Bond, James Bond, was in many cases a douche bag. JB through his unique approach to life stood out above the crowd, getting the attention of the ladies while making the men jealous.
What’s The Catch?
The catch is this cologne’s average price is a bit higher than other colognes out there today. As with other colognes, the notes in this bottle won’t work with everyone.
My Polo Experience
My experience with this cologne is for the most part good. Of course, there are some women that don’t like it. That goes with the territory I’m sorry to say. My best reaction to this cologne somewhat surprised me but helped me to understand how my cologne can affect those around me.
On my first date with a particular lady( a time in which a woman maybe tense running with her shields up), I splashed a little Green on. A couple of hours later, I noticed she relaxed, smiled and was more open with me. My first thought was this was the result of the drinks we had.
Later, she confided in me that my cologne reminded her of her dad. Before I could react, she went on to say it didn’t remind her of her dad in an “old dude” way, it reminded her of a time when he scared away the boogie man and nothing could touch her. She felt as if she could trust me right then and there. A trust I’m happy to report I didn’t betray.
Other Stuff
Polo by Ralph Lauren is long-lived cologne (last 8+ hours on my skin) a little will go a long way. Remember you’re just one dab from going from stunning to stinky
