A few days ago, I was sitting back reading the daily dramas on FaceBook when up popped a friend request from someone I dated many moons ago. Her first question was (well second question after what was my marital status) was “what 90’s cologne comes to mind when you think of a real dating?” I’m not talking about a sport frack mission. I’m talking about a “gee I really like this girl I want to impress her*” type of evening in which you’re heading out with a woman you really dig.
Almost immediately Gucci Envy for Men popped up in my mind.
* Fellas, it’s OK to really like a woman and think she’s the one you want to marry and die with. That said, you have to make sure the one you think you like is really the one. ’nuff said!
History
I really began to seriously date back in the late ’90s, Gucci Envy for Men, released in 1998(one year after his big sister Gucci Envy for Women) comes to mind.
This was a time when music was “fun.”
Songs that are now considered wedding classics such as All My Life by K-CI & Jojo, Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden or You’re Still the One by Shania Twain.
Songs about more than whippin’ out your @#$#
What’s the difference between a great first date cologne and a second date cologne? A first date cologne for men is one that isn’t too obvious. By that I mean on a first date you’re trying to sell yourself, not your fragrance. A first date frag isn’t your personality, it enhances it.
If you’ve made it to a second or third date or as I call it an interview you have a good are, at the very least in the running to seal the deal and get that girl!
What’s In It?
- Top Notes: Cardamom, Ginger, Lavender, Mahogany, Mandarin Orange, Pepper
- Middle Notes: Carnation, Cedar, Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood
- Base Notes: Amber, Incense, Leather, Musk, Patchouli, Tobacco, Vanilla, Vetiver
This Cologne Is Best Suited For
My advice is to hold Gucci Envy in reserve and use it for your second date or beyond scent or your next signature scent if you find it’s well received. Envy is for a man who is looking to create or introduce a romantic feel to his persona. You’ve made it past the first date, you’re really interested in this lady. Time to step it up, son!
The guy who wears this cologne is one who is comfortable with and likes spicy colognes. If Spicy/Oriental colognes aren’t your thing, you may want to pass this one by. The catch is the same with many of the nicer colognes and perfumes out here, cost. As of this writing, a 1.7 oz eau de toilette spray bottle of Envy was running about $118.00 per bottle, low-cost mini bottles* around $15.00. Another catch is availability, many online source list this cologne as “out of stock.”
But hey, I’m a turn lemons into Jack Daniels and lemonade, a high cost, low availability cologne isn’t one you will smell all over the place.*Low cost mini bottles are a great way to start a fragrance collection or add to a larger collection. As I have quite a few bottles in my collection, a mini lasts me quite a while.
My Experience
My experience with this cologne is it is well received, but only if I’ve had it on maybe forty-five minutes to an hour before a meetup.
I had to study on this and pull out my aromatherapy books to get a possible reason for this phenomenon. I buy a cologne to experience all of the notes from the top to the base notes. However, I’ve noticed the middle or heart notes appear to create a relaxing atmosphere.
Each of the heart notes in their essential oil forms is known to calm and soothe the nerves and promote a relaxing experience. The rose notes are associated with moods and attitudes such as desire passion and sympathy. Are the middles notes working their magic and relaxing my date or is she relaxing because of my direct but “I’m not going to @#$# you over” personality?
I’m betting both of these elements are working hand in hand.
Gucci Envy, on my skin, isn’t one of my longest lasting colognes. I get about 5 hours out of an application but that’s good enough for a date. Any date that goes past five hours has moved to another venue or level in which what I’m wearing isn’t an issue.
Finding a bottle of Gucci Envy for men is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If you do find a bottle, grab onto and hold onto it like grim death.
An original, green bottle of Gucci Envy at a low price is pretty much unheard of these days. I found my two bottles at a flea market and a garage sale. These days these treasures are only available on and specialty shops. If you do snag a bottle. you could probably make your money back by buying a few vials or mini spray bottle and selling decants.
Who knows, if you were good this year and ask nice, the Scent Bro may send you a free sample.
