How To Buy A New Cologne
The best way to choose a cologne or perfume is more than little spritzes on a tiny card. I’ll show you the best method to Choose & Wear a fragrance. What is the best method to choose and wear a fragrance? Which cologne is the best for men? What is the most popular cologne that women love?
When purchasing a new perfume or cologne, some thought should go into what time of day do you plan to wear your new best scent.
A cologne that works well in a smoky bar may be too powerful for work or school. The opposite is true, your favorite fragrance that is great for work or school won’t make it ina smokey bar as it would probably be too weak to be noticed.
Next to the way a perfume of cologne makes us feel, getting noticed is one of the top reasons to wear a frag.
Casual Daytime Cologne
When building a fragrance collection, the first scent you should think about is something casual. our day time scent should be light and fresh as we’ll be around a lot of folks during the day whether it class or work.
I for one don’t want to be the dude you can smell from a mile away leaving a trail of stench trail created by a healthy dose of Axe Body Spray. Casual daytime cologne can also fill the role of a first date scent. A first date scent is one that compliments your personality rather than defining it.
Personally, I tend to stay away from whatever the most popular cologne for men is at that time. I don’t want to smell like every guy she’s passed on the way to meet me.
I want my first scent impression to be one unique to me.
Age
Your age Is something to consider when buying a fragrance. It is possible that a cologne could be too old or too young for a person. Of course, how you carry yourself helps you pull off wearing a frag that others would say is age-inappropriate for you.
As an example, if you’re a mature guy who decides to rock a “younger” cologne because of nothing more than you like the smell, rock on dude,
Conversely, there’s nothing wrong with a younger guy who decides he wants to wear a mature (mature does not mean old) cologne.
As an example, one of my favorite colognes is the original Polo Green . It’s an older scent, probably older than some of my readers but it plays well with me. I wore it out once on a date and was told I smell like her father.
Is My Cologne To Old For Me?
My first thought was rah-ro, sitting and talking to her a little more, I was able to sense her comfort level with me increase. That scent triggered memories of her daddy which translated to her being more at ease with me.
Some fragrance purists advise that it is best not wear a scent that’s too young for you. Of course, if you wear it well, right on.
A fifty-year-old man should probably avoid Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce unless his thing is to bring out the young girl in the woman he plans to be around.
A side benefit to an older man wearing Fierce is the other guys in his playgroup probably won’t be wearing this cologne.
This alone will help him stand out from the herd just as a younger guy wearing Polo by Ralph Lauren will be a step above the rest of the guys.
A Reason For A New Cologne
Other than personal gratification, why are you buying a new perfume for cologne? I find myself heading over to Macy’s in search of a new scent based on an upcoming event. That event could be a first date scenario, a second date event, a romantic encounter or special event such as a wedding.
As mentioned above, a first date scent should be a light something that enhances your personality, not define it. A second date cologne, in my opinion, is one that you would want to use to seal the deal.
The second date in some situations could be considered a second interview. I want to step it up just a bit on the fragrance tip.
When it comes to a romantic or special event scent, I want something that does define me. I want something that triggers a scent memory of a great time out with The Scent Bro. No matter how this thing ends, I want this cologne to be one that reminds her of me.
How Should I Wear My New Scent?
After all of this, just how should I wear my cologne? That’s easy, choose a place on your body to spray or dab on your cologne that will do the most good. Spraying cologne on your clothes is a losing proposition.
Your clothes don’t produce the body heat needed to jump-start your cologne.
However, there are points on your body that bring more heat to the surface than others. Your wrists, for example, make for great personal body heat. Heat that helps your fragrance to bloom and project.
I’ve been told that only women apply fragrances to their wrist, usually from guys who buy their cologne by the gallon, live in their mom’s basements and/or use body sprays in place of showers.
Fact is the wrists regardless of sex are one of the best places to apply a fragrance.
Blood Flow Equals Scent Projection
The reason for applying in these areas is there is a lot of blood flowing through these veins, blood equals heat. A great scent fragrance is enhanced by heat. The heat produced by a human body.
Another great area for perfume application would be the inside of the knee. Women for years have applied fragrance to the inside of their knees understanding and artery or heat source is present.
One of my favorite spots to apply my cologne is far from traditional. I like to apply a little dab of scent on top of my head. This of course only works if your skull has been kissed by the gods. This kiss has allowed the useless hair to fall out leaving nothing but a shiny chrome down ready to accept whatever fragrance I see fit to apply.
A great deal of your body heat is lost through your head. My non-scientific study has proven that a bald head is one of the best places on the human body to apply your best-smelling aroma from a bottle.
Take your spray bottle and hold it about 3 inches for your target point and let it rip. A shot of good cologne in a couple of these points should do you just fine. Dabbing a few drops on in this area will work just as well.
Another thought I have related to wearing a cologne comes into play when washing my butt (my phrase for taking a shower). I tend to avoid scented soaps that can interfere with my cologne.
I don’t want my scent to fight a battle with my bath soap.
For that matter, with the exception of my bedding and towels, I don’t wash with anything scented for the same reason.
How To Store A Perfume Or Cologne?
A perfume or cologne is basically a bottle of volatile essential oils (natural or synthetic) suspended in a filler that consists of either water and/or alcohol. The oils or scents tend to lose their power if they’re exposed to heat or light.
That said, the best place to store a cologne is somewhere devoid of light or heat. I would avoid the medicine chest as it could get a little warm in there. If you have a linen closet, stash your collection there.
The Scentimental Brotha (AKA Scent Bro) goes above and beyond by storing his scents in an old dorm room fridge leftover from his Cool and dark this little container keeps my frags fresh and ready to go.
