I was on YouTube watching Star Wars and cooking videos when I came across an interesting Men’s Cologne piece. The Scent Bro wants to learn as much about cologne as I can.
A gentleman who goes by the name Style OG posted 10 Hack To Make Your Cologne Last Longer.
I thought I would review his video and share my thoughts on his hacks.
1-1:02 Make the scent last longer by storing it properly
I agree with Style OG. Storing any fragrance on you drop on your bathroom counter will age it faster than it should. If you only have a bottle or two that you use every day, no worries, you’ll be back at Macy’s getting a new, possibly reformulated bottle (that doesn’t smell quite the same) in no time.
If you have more than a few bottles in your collection as I do and won’t run through them as fast, proper storage is a must.
A cool dark place is the best place to store your frags. I keep mine in the walk-in but if you don’t have one, try to save them in the linen closet or under the bathroom counter.
2-1:19 Fragrance Concentrations
I’m not sure if this is a hack or a lesson on fragrance concentration that can be found here. Style OG does give an excellent presentation on fragrance concentration. EDT vs. EDP Concentration.
To keep things simple, EDP contains more fragrance oil and a less expensive EDT version. The more fragrance oil you have in a bottle, the less you’ll use and the longer it will last.
On the other hand, I have EDT versions in my collection that will last 6+ hours on my skin.
3-1:53 Apply your cologne after a shower
Based on my cologne experience and the mission, I won’t apply any cologne straight out of the shower. Depending on the cologne, I may want not want to show up to a date or event until the Middle Notes are blooming.
Applying a cologne straight out of the shower, in my opinion, will rush my fragrance of the day through its notes.
His theory is based on your pores being open after a shower is exciting and something, I’m going to try using a casual work or school cologne.
4-2:07 Apply an unscented lotion to your skin before applying a cologne
Another interesting theory that I will have to try. I’m thinking that may be a bit much when it comes to getting ready to go out. Then again, my going out goals may be different than Style OG’s.
I may be heading out to a bonfire, reveal party or something that I won’t have to take as much time getting together as he is.
My man does say something I’ve said for a long time.
When choosing a deodorant or lotion, skip the scented stuff as it will compete with a great cologne you paid good money for.
My personal choice for “skin hydration” or getting rid of the ash is pure coconut oil.
It’s good for the skin and makes my beautiful bald dome shine a little.
5-2:29 Where to apply your cologne
Style OG is spot on when it comes to where to apply cologne.
I cover this in my article, How To Buy A New Cologne Like A Pro. I suggest you apply your fragrance to pulse points and not your clothes. A pulse point is where you can feel your pulse. A pulse point is a place where heat is “vented.” Heat activates your cologne.
Pulse points include:
- Neck-Those jugular veins in your neck…Often times, I’ll spray a little scent on my finger and apply directly to my jugular. Yes, this is something you see women do. They do this FOR A GOOD REASON. It works!
- Wrist-Both of your wrist veins are great places to apply cologne. Once again, in perfume ads, you see women applying perfume to their wrist…. Why, because it works!
One heat source I don’t see folks talking about a lot is on your head.
If you’re bald like me, applying a little scent to your dome is a great way to project(link) scent.
While many people believe you lose a lot of heat through your head has been debunked, you best believe a lot of heat is coming out of your chimney.
This is why I won’t hesitate to apply a light scent or pheromone to my freshly shaven head.
6-3:00 Apply Vaseline To Your Pulse Point…
Ehhhh. I don’t know about this. To my mind, this is too much work. So, I have to dab on Vaseline after lotioning up after showering… I think I’ll pass on this step.
The theory here as I understand it is that Petroleum Jelly will lock the scent into one place.
I really don’t buy into this one.
Sigh…Being a Typical Gemini, I’ll give it a shot and let you guys know how it worked out…
7-3:25 Brining Cotton Balls In A Baggy
This is a hack that I’ll have to pass on totally. There are a lot of great colognes that come in EDT concentration that just won’t last a long time depending on the person. I won’t walk around with cotton rounds in a bag. The only reason I’ll do that is if I want to drop them in my car to give her a fresh scent of the night.
Don’t get me wrong, I do believe in carrying a backup with it comes to scents that race through their notes and vanish like a “fart in the wind.”
My back up is a simple decant.
I’ll buy a few plastic sized travel bottles from Amazon Click Here (Affiliate Link) and fill them with my quick burning scent and reinforce the frag as needed…
8-3:54 The Real Strong Cologne You Love
Style OG suggests you spray your cologne into the air and walk through it. This is something I typically don’t do but have seen done many times with other guys who like SOG know cologne.
My process with heavy colognes such as a Tom Ford Extreme(Affiliate Link) is to spray a little on to my fingers and then apply my pulse points.
My concern with walking through a mist is I don’t want the cologne to land on my clothes where it will stay forever and a day or until I wash or stop being cheap and drop off at the dry cleaners.
9-4:19 When the bottle is almost empty, and nothing comes out
I like the idea of decanting or pouring that last little bit of cologne into another bottle. I’m into recycling, but I’m not sure if I’ll pour it into a lotion bottle.
What I would do is decant those last bits of the precious juice into a Smaller Spray Bottle (Affiliate Link)I found on Amazon and keep the party going. As he says, we waste nothing here.
10-Layering To Create A Custom Scent
Of all the hacks Style OG laid out, layering is a secret he should have kept to himself. Layering colognes is a way to come up with a signature scent that will get you a lot of compliments (Ice Breaker) and have folks ask you that important question… “What are you wearing?”
I have a few secret layers that I just won’t share with you.
OK…I’ll give you one of my most complimented and go to layers.
- 1-Good shot of John Varvatos(The Black Bottle) released in 2004
- 1-Good Shot of Armani(Black) Code released in 2004
- 1-Good Shot of Armani Mania released in 2002
If you’re looking for a robust, masculine but sweet layer, this is it!
Over the years, I’ve received quite a few compliments from women who were turned on by this layer.
Thanks to Style OG for putting out an excellent and informative video…
