“Until Death Do Us Part”
For men over 40, this phrase just doesn’t mean what it used to. That reason alone makes it important that we come up with a few new colognes for older men.
In our parent’s day, this meant they stayed married until one of them passed. Whether they were happy or not is a different story. Flash forward to our playgroup (35-55 years old), the divorce rate in America is more than 50%. Many of us in our late 30’s and up now find ourselves back in the dating game. We’re out there looking for love from a new breed of woman, a breed that frankly finds us boring.
According to a recent Huff Post Article, guys in our age bracket are in direct competition with younger men for women our age.
Let’s face it, after years of marriage, many of us may have forgotten what it means to be spontaneous and not so boring. We’re football dads, working men etc. To some of these women, this doesn’t mean what it used to. In order to compete, now is the time to shake off some of our old tired ways and adopt a new attitude.
A new attitude in the form of a new and improved body, a set of clothes and of course it’s time to update our scent collection with a few new colognes for older men colognes that don’t say old fuddy duddy.

When considering starting a new men’s fragrance collection or upgrading your old set, you’re going to need at least one:
- Casual Cologne
- Bar/Club Cologne
- Special Occasion Cologne
Casual Colognes For Older Men
Casual cologne is one that won’t overwhelm a captive audience in places such as the classroom or office. All of us know of at least one human gas chamber roaming the office knocking off every living thing as they pass.
A fragrance in this class can also pull double duty as a nice first date scent. On a first date, you don’t want your frag speaking for you. You want it to compliment your overall presentation.
Eternity Calvin Klein for Men
One Of My First Scents
Released in 1990, Eternity was one of my first signature scents. I remember the guys passing this stuff around, in the dorm, right before we went out to conquer the world or at least the party. Looking back, this gentle, citrus scent just wouldn’t work for a crowded college party. What it did work for was a nice fresh scent that worked for class.
As I got older and out of school, this cologne turned into my work signature scent thanks to its not so strong projection but great sillage. One would know if I was in the coffee/copier room and walked down the hall without having to ask.
Do I wear it as much now as I did then, no but it has a special place in my heart as it helped me to get married?
I still wear it from time to time.
Eternity Calvin Klein for Men Notes

- Base Notes-Amber, Brazilian Rosewood, Musk, Sandalwood, Vetiver
Bar/Club Colognes For Older Men
What is a bar or club cologne? A bar scent in this group is one that’s stronger than casual/first date cologne. Think of the odors and smells you’ve encountered in a bar. There’s cigarette or cigar smoke in the air. There’s the smell of fried chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks.
There’s BO coming from guys who think a good shower is an option. Last but not least, there are the smells of every day, “top 4 colognes” every guy in the place is wearing. Your bar/club scent has to cut through all this mess and stand out at the same time. Simply put, you’re not going to stand out from the herd if you can’t be smelled or smell like the rest of the pack
Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme
Speaking of standing out in a crowd(projection) Gucci is one of the pleasantly strong scents in my collection. This juice will cut through the murkiest hole in the wall you can find.
Long lasting with a nice scent trail, you must have this cologne in your collection if you’re looking for a bar/club scent that could double as a nice second date scent. While I’m quick to spend money on cologne, I want to get maximum value for my dollar. I try to find scents that will fill one or more niches.
Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme Notes
- Top Notes- Bergamot, Cypress, Violet
- Middle Notes- Jasmine, Tobacco
- Base Notes- Amber, Olibanum, Patchouli, Elemi Resin, Leather
Special Occasion Colognes For Older Men
A special occasion cologne can be a casual scent and/or a bar scent. A special occasion cologne is one that I use for….wait for it….Special occasions such as that date of the century, office holiday parties where you want to make an impression and of course weddings.
Special occasion scent is those that score at least 8 for:
- Longevity
- Projection
- Sillage
Frags that fit into this group quite frankly aren’t cheap. These are typically available in expensive EDP(Eau De Parfum) versions. Personally, I’m not
going to come out with the big guns unless it’s truly a special occasion.
Of course, the concept of a special occasion is subjective.
Terre d`Hermes Parfum Hermes
Signature Scent
When the thought of a special occasion cologne comes to mind, one of the first scents that pop into my head is Terre d’ Hermes. This thing can fit into 3 categories as far as I’m concerned and serves as one of my signature scents. Terre d’ Hermes.
On my skin, the longevity(how long it lasts) is off the charts second only to Fierce by Abercrombie and Fitch. I’ve sprayed this on prior to going out around 7:00 and smelled it at breakfast at 3:00 in the morning,
Projection(how far it drifts from you) also rates high. High enough to get gals from across the room to walk up and ask what I’m wearing.
Terre d’ Hermes scores high on the sillage chart. In fact, this scent was once described to me as a pillow scent. A scent a woman wanted to smell on her pillowcase the next day.
Terre d’ Hermes Notes
- Top Notes: Grapefruit, Orange
- Middle Notes: Flint
- Base Notes: Benzoin, Oak Moss, Woody Notes
Terre d’ Hermes is a little pricey but when you wear it, you’ll see where that money went. In my humble opinion, avoid the EDP version and save some cash buying the EDT version. On the upside, thanks to the cost and the fact it’s not Aqua Di Gio, you’re likely to be the only one rocking this scent wherever you go.
