Most people are not conscious of the full impact of a fragrance or scent and how it speaks for them without having to say a word. Thanks to scent projection and sillage, your scent will follow you wherever you go.
It lingers with each breath you take; so much so that it needs to make and leave an impression on the persons you meet. Whether or not you have a signature scent or need to switch fragrances depending upon your mood, it is clear that you would want that scent to project as far as it can.
Selecting A Fragrance
It certainly is important to select a fragrance with specific notes which appeal to you and blend well with your body oils and natural essence. However, it’s one thing to decide you are going to wear fragrance, but how do you tell which one is right for you?
When you’re choosing a fragrance to wear, scent projection is one of the four things you should bear in mind besides silage, intensity, and longevity.
The projection of scent means how far a fragrance radiates off of your skin and how it gets perceived by other people in the same room as you – in case they’re standing in close proximity to you or 10-feet away.
Scents don’t have to contain anything especially stealthy or tenacious, such as patchouli, so as to project; the scent character can be dark or light, fruity, floral, woody, spicy, and sweet. It’s possible for scent projection to arise from the dry down, which’s where one typically finds heavy base notes like musk, amber, or vanilla, but it could just as easily radiate from the heart or top notes.
Yet what such notes refer to is the distinctive breakdown of what’s actually smelled within a perfume, and it does happen in 3 stages. First, there is the top note, then followed by the middle note, and lastly, the base note, which is light yet stops the cologne’s projection.
Eau de Parfum(EDP)-Eau de Toilette(EDT)
It is rather possible for you to calibrate the throw of your fragrance: Perfume diffuses more when applied to well-moisturized skin as compared to dry skin (mull about how much more aware you’re of scents in humid climates—same idea). Dabs of an-Eau de Parfum (EDP), which is more highly concentrated, have a tendency to project less compared to spritzes of an-Eau de Toilette (EDT).
It is also easy to choose a fragrance or cologne according to the environment—you may want a bit more discreet scent projection in the workplace, for instance, than you would when at a party.
Dabbing perfume on your pulse points can develop the fragrance of your perfume to the next level. This is because heat enhances and releases the fragrance of your perfume which makes its projection even greater than ever before.
The strength of the fragrance can also affect scent projection, or how far the fragrance travels. A stronger perfume can be smelled many steps away, whilst a milder one is only perceptible by someone in a close embrace.
Strong smells aren’t necessarily better compared to mild ones. Anything that can be perceived as more than a step away is considered overkill.
You can purchase and wear a strong scent, but it does require much more careful application. Just a tiny dab is sufficient with potent blends. Stronger scents are much better for winter since scents project less in the winter.
