Maninka Fruit
Maninka Fruit is the fruit of the so-called snuffbox tree (Oncoba Spinosa) or fried egg tree. The first name is derived from the
use of the fruits, including the processing of snuffboxes while the second name derives from the appearance of the flowers that resemble a fried egg. The name probably stems from an ethnic group with a similar name living in different West African countries and uses the fruits for economical purposes. Although the pulp of Maninka fruit is edible, it is seldom used for that purpose.
Its roots are used by the African communities to treat dysentery and bladder problems while the fruits are used as snuff boxes.
Distribution of Maninka Fruit Although the name Maninka has it origin in West Africa, the fruits are mainly found in South Africa, in regions such as Mpumalanga and along River Zambezi to the north.
It is also found in Fynbos region in the Southern Cape region as well as in Bushveld areas. According to the locals in South Africa, the fruit is an aphrodisiac not only for men but for women too.
